Ghani warns of a humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan.

2 min read

While thousands of Afghan citizens are being forcibly deported from neighboring countries—especially Iran and Pakistan—and heart-wrenching images of them at Afghanistan’s western borders stir deep sorrow, Ashraf Ghani, the fugitive former president of Afghanistan, has broken his silence with an emotional message.

In his statement, Ghani referred to the heartbreaking scenes of returning migrants, writing:

“The tears of children, the bent backs of old men, the terrified eyes of women and girls, and the hopeless faces of the youth bring tears to the eyes and blood to the heart. These moments are more painful than anything I’ve ever seen in my life.”

The former president, who has lived in exile since 2021, stressed that the current condition of Afghan migrants is a humanitarian crisis rapidly turning into a full-scale catastrophe. Criticizing the silence of the international community and inaction within the country, he warned that if no voice rises from within Afghanistan now, tomorrow will be too late for any action.

Ghani also stated:

“Now, more than ever, we need a national determination and a true consensus so we can emerge from this historical test with dignity.”

These remarks come amid widespread criticism that Ghani himself played a major role in the collapse of Afghanistan’s political structure and the onset of the latest wave of migration. Nevertheless, regardless of the past, his recent message reflects the dire current reality of the Afghan people at the borders—and perhaps a bid to re-enter the public discourse.
