Women’s Movement for Freedom: Systematic Denial of Education for Women in Afghanistan Is a Crime Against Humanity

On the occasion of January 24, International Education Day, the Women’s Movement for Freedom issued a statement describing the systematic deprivation of girls and women from education in Afghanistan as a “crime against humanity” and “a clear example of gender-based apartheid,” calling for its immediate and unconditional end.

The statement emphasized that education is a fundamental and inalienable right of every human being, and no political, ideological, or ruling power has the right to deny it. The movement stressed that preventing education, especially for girls and women, constitutes a blatant violation of human rights and poses a serious threat to Afghanistan’s social, cultural, and economic future.

The Women’s Movement for Freedom stated that currently, millions of girls and women in Afghanistan are systematically denied access to education, a situation that endangers not only their individual lives but also the future of the entire country.

The statement further criticized the global community’s silence on women’s educational deprivation as “complicity with oppression” and called on international bodies to take concrete and binding measures against the ruling group in Afghanistan, rather than symbolic stances.

The movement also described the exclusion of women from the education system as a deliberate attempt to remove them from the country’s social and political life, stressing that this policy is destined to fail against the conscious and civil resistance of Afghan women.

Expressing full support for the civil resistance of Afghan girls and women, the Women’s Movement for Freedom affirmed that the struggle for the right to education will continue until full freedom and equality are achieved, and that Afghanistan’s future without free and equal education for women will be dark and unstable.
